While side quests can easily end up as filler and cheap distractions in many games with open-world elements, Yakuza 0 does a great job in providing interesting ones overall. The variety in combat options is certainly nice though the fighting can still get repetitive after a while. Kiryu and Goro each have their own share of styles to switch into as well, including well-balanced brawling as well as options that lean toward power or reaction.īoth also have final styles that can be unlocked. The game also uses QTEs, I think are well executed well for the most part. You have various combos as part of your arsenal as well as specials that help even out your odds when fighting against multiple foes or particularly strong enemies. The combat in the game has a bit of a Shenmue and Virtua Fighter feel to it with different fighting styles and tons of progression through various skill trees. While his straightforwardness and lack of Machiavellian sophistication is a decided disadvantage for the young Kiryu when it comes to yakuza politics, his fighting prowess is practically without par and is his strongest asset. The man has a strong sense of honor and even justice for a gang member, as well as bountiful kindness. Kiryu is the perfect example of a gray character. The younger Kiryu is one filled with potential but also quite green, making him a target for folks jostling for position within the ranks of his underworld family. This makes the game a good entry point even for newcomers who have never played a game in the series. Yakuza 0 has you experiencing its story through the eyes of two protagonists.
